Andrew attacks Local Government cuts in Parliamentary Debate

Speaking in Parliament Andrew has spoken in a Parliamentary Debate outlining how the savage cuts by the new government are set to have a huge effect on jobs and services in Denton and Reddish.

In the speech Andrew outlined how Tameside would be heavily effected by the cuts, as the borough is ranked as the 56th most deprived local authority area in England. Andrew also outlined that the cuts could well impact more harshly on less affluent areas of Stockport, such as Reddish. The Liberal Democrat Stockport Council does not do anything like enough for its most deprived communities, including the Reddish wards.

Changes to the benefits and tax credits will already have a disproportionate effect in some areas of  Denton and Reddish due to the existing high levels of income deprivation, and likely lead to even more people calling on council services in their time of need.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“We are certainly facing some really tough times in Denton and Reddish, before we even consider George Osborne’s plans to sack 1.3million people, including council workers. What this new Government doesn’t understand is that budget cuts in local government will not be in "silos", as all agencies are now largely linked up.”

“For example it is easy to cut the aids and adaptations budgets for adult social services, but if the result of cutting a £100 handrail for an elderly constituent is to have to pay thousands of pounds on a hip operation in the NHS, which will not have saved the public purse. This really does need careful consideration to make sure it doesn’t do more harm than good.”
