Blog>> Making sure we get the best deal for the world’s poorest countries. - 03:51 pm, Mon 22nd Feb 2010

Today marks the start of Fairtrade fortnight, a very important way we can show our support for third world countries in these challenging economic times.

I have written an article about it for the Stockport Express where I outline why I am supporting this important issue.

I know from speaking to people in Stockport that Fairtrade is an important issue, it allows us all to give a helping hand to some of the poorest countries in the world.

I have certainly been active in Parliament to ensure that the worlds most in need get the most help we can give. I have backed all the initiatives taken forward by this Labour Government to reduce third world debt. I am currently taking through a Private Members Bill to help the practices of so called “Vulture Funds”, where a small number of investment companies aim to profit from third world debt.

So I really welcome the fact that it will be Fairtrade fortnight from Monday 22nd February to Sunday 7th March.  Even though there is a global economic downturn, it is vital that we keep buying food, gifts and other products from developing countries. This will help grow their economies and reduce poverty.

But there lots we can do in Stockport to support Fairtrade Fortnight, and there are three simple we can all take.

First, where possible, swap your shopping for a Fairtrade labelled product.

Second, if there is no Fairtrade labelled alternative, ask the retailer to offer Fairtrade products in the future.

Third, ask for clear labelling about where products have come from and about the working conditions of those who produced the goods.

By shopping for development we can help provide a vital route out of poverty for many in the world’s poorest countries. And by following the three simple steps we can have an immediate effect over Fairtrade Fortnight.

And if you, like me, feel strongly about global poverty, add your voice to the campaign for a law to guarantee international aid at www.globalpovertypromise.com

Blog>> New way to keep in touch - 04:54 pm, Mon 8th Feb 2010

I have started to write a new political blog so people can keep up to date with what I am doing in Parliament and in the constituency.

The blog is on the Think Politics web site, which gives a really good insight to all the goings on taking place in politics today in the run up to the general election. My old posts will be kept on this website, but to read my new posts please look at the blog at:
