Action demanded for North Road residents

Jean BrazilLocal campaigner Jean Brazil has sided with residents on North Road, Audenshaw, in demanding a fair deal from Tameside Council in order to resolve their concerns.

North Road, on the Snipe estate, has been used as a temporary route for construction vehicles going to the new Aldwyn School site. Heavy vehicles routinely access the site from North Road to make deliveries of equipment and building materials to the site and have been causing residents considerable disruption and inconvenience.

Now residents are seeking assurances that once the construction of the new school has been completed the road and pavements, which are in a poor condition – and made considerably worse by the construction traffic – are reinstated back to a good condition. They also want to ensure that an open green area and public footpath, which was dug up to create a temporary access road, is fully restored to its original condition.

Jean Brazil said:

“Residents have had to put up with a lot. While the new school is brilliant news for Audenshaw’s children and parents, the disturbance to residents on North Road during the construction phase has been considerable and extremely problematic. I have picked up on these concerns during my recent walkabouts and I agree with residents that their concerns need to be both listened to and acted upon.”

“That is why I will be working closely with Audenshaw’s Member of Parliament to ensure that the area is brought back to the standard it should be in. I want the residents of North Road, who live by the school construction site, to have their community restored to the quiet residential area it previously was. It is the very least the Council should do given the substantial inconvenience and damage to the road which has been caused by this project."

Residents' concerns were also raised at a recent meeting of Denton and Audenshaw District Assembly when Andrew Gwynne MP responded to the delegation by saying:

“I understand fully the concerns of local residents who have been greatly inconvenienced during the construction of the new Aldwyn School. I think it is absolutely right and crucial that the very least Tameside can do is to re-instate the area as it should be, to undo all the damage to the pavements, road and the general environment around that section of North Road.”
