Government scrap school improvements in Denton and Reddish

School Andrew has responded angrily to announcement that the government is set to scrap new school building projects in Denton and Reddish.

In Tameside the schools that had their funding scrapped were St Thomas More, Audenshaw, All Saints, Copley, West Hill, Fairfield and Longdendale. In Stockport it effectively ends the chances of Reddish Vale Technology College and St Anne’s RC High School in Heaton Chapel getting any Building Schools for the Future money.

Now there will be hundreds of new school projects that will be scrapped across the country. Building Schools for the Future is a scheme introduced by the previous Labour Government which was set to see projects started by 2016 to rebuild and refurbish all secondary schools.

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“This is a huge blow to parents, teachers, pupils and the local community in Denton and Reddish. I had lobbied hard over the last parliament for our local schools to be included in this programme.”

“Children in Denton and Reddish will not be able to have access to high quality classrooms and cutting-edge facilities in their Secondary School, this is really bad news.”

“This means we will have a two tier system, with state of the art facilities in the new schools currently being built and the older facilities in all other schools. This is a shameful act by the new Government.”

The announcement will not affect Denton Community College or Academies.

Wave Three Building Schools for the Future projects going ahead are:
