Growing numbers of youngsters are now jobless says Andrew Gwynne MP

Supporting Labour’s five point planIn Parliament Andrew Gwynne MP has grilled the Chancellor of the Exchequer about jobless figures for young people in Denton and Reddish. In Treasury oral questions, Andrew asked what the government were doing to help young people his constituency to get a job. Recent figures from the Office of National Statistics have shown that  across Tameside for 16-24 year olds there are 5,300 – some 34% of that age group that are unemployed. This is an increase of 14% since March 2010. In Stockport for 16-24 year olds there are 4,800 – some 19% of that age group that are unemployed.

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“This government really haven’t got a clue how to get us out of the economic slump, let alone deal with the growing number of jobless young people.”

“This is a really worrying time for families; struggling with higher food prices and gas bills and worried about their jobs and their children’s futures.”

“That’s why I support Ed Ball’s five-point plan for jobs, which will help to create 100,000 jobs for young people all over the country.”

Labour’s five-point plan for jobs and growth includes:

A £2 billion tax on bank bonuses to fund 100,000 jobsfor young people - which they would be required to take up - and build 25,000 more affordable homes.

Bringing forward long-term investment projects schools, roads and transport - to get people back to work and strengthen our economy for the future.

Reversing January's damaging VAT rise now for a temporary period - a £450 boost for a couple with children - immediate help for our high streets and for struggling families and pensioners.

A one year cut in VAT to 5% on home improvements, repairs and maintenance - to help homeowners and small businesses.

A one year national insurance tax break for every small firm which takes on extra workers - helping small businesses to grow and create jobs.
