Launching the Labour Party Transport Policy Review

Launching the Labour Party Transport Policy Review Students had the chance to scrutinise Andrew at the launch of Labour Party Transport Policy Review at Tameside College. This happened as a national consultation document entitled ‘How can we get Britain better connected?’ was launched to encourage the public to give their view on Transport Policy. It will ask questions such as what can Labour learn from its time in office, what should Labour oppose and support from the current government and what are priorities for improving our transport system?

Andrew Gwynne MP for Denton and Reddish and Shadow Transport Minister said:

“I am very happy to be launching Labour’s policy review with a round table discussion involving Tameside students. Young people in Greater Manchester have already been adversely hit by the recent changes to concessionary fares, so I think it is important to hear what transport policies they want to see from a future Labour Government.”

“I think it is important that Labour look again at all our policies, including transport and gain a fresh perspective from a wide range of people for our next steps.”

The review will also consider questions such as how can transport better help reduce inequality and increase social mobility? How can we have sustainable and affordable transport? Are transport decisions taken by the right people at the right level? How will new technology change the transport we need in the future?

The policy reviews that Andrew will personally undertake will be in his portfolio areas of buses and rail. The buses review will look at the case for further regulation of services and access to services since deregulation in 1986. It will look at cases where deregulation has succeeded and where it has failed and why. The trains review will look at the future and financing of the rail industry and the affordability of travel. The Policy Review will consult with a wide range of groups and organizations in the run up to the launch of policies at Party conference in September this year.
