Labour MP for Denton and Reddish
Shadow Health Minister
The 20% cut in Police Budgets by 2014/15 imposed by the Government will mean 3000 overall job losses in Greater Manchester as part of £134M worth of cuts. This is the bad news given to both Police Staff and Police Officers at the Reebok Stadium yesterday.
In the coming year 616 Police Staff and 270 Police Officers will be lost. This is in addition to the 515 lost in 2010/11. Service levels will be dramatically cut right across significant part of frontline services. A further 1600 job losses will be lost in the next two years.
Andrew Gwynne MP said:
“I am hugely concerned about policing cuts and the effect they will have in Denton and Reddish. An Officer at a Police Front Desk is very important to the police presence and making people feel reassured about crime. That is why I am so frustrated that the front desk facilities in Denton, Reddish and Dukinfield are under threat.”
Jim Moodie, UNISON North West Lead Officer for Police says:
“Hundreds of UNISON members will find out today whether they will still have a job or not. The size of these cut backs is shocking. The Public will see many frontline services reduced including 40% reduction in public enquiry centres. The reductions also mean that some Crime Scenes will not be investigated and less Forensic examinations will take place. Less staff on non-emergency calls will put pressure on the 999 service. We believe crime rates will inevitably rise and confidence in the Police Service will fall. This Government’s cut back are too deep, too quick and not necessary. They should heed the warning that Less staff means more crime.”
