Welcoming £320 Million Schools bonanza for Tameside

BSF PhotocallAndrew Gwynne MP has welcomed the announcement in Parliament that Tameside’s secondary schools have successfully been awarded the remainder of Building Schools for the Future (BSF) funding to the tune of £120 Million.

Building Schools for the Future is a Government funded scheme, which will see projects started by 2016 to rebuild and refurnish all secondary schools.  Although future funding remains in doubt as the Conservatives are committed to cutting this investment substantially

This new money comes on top of the £192 million already awarded to the borough to rebuild 12 schools, work which is already underway. Previous schools that were in the first wave of BSF funding included Mossley Hollins, St. Damian’s, Samuel Laycock, New Charter Academy, Hyde Technology School, Dale Grove, Denton Community College, KS4 Learning Centre, Droylsden Academy, Astley Sports College and Cromwell High School (KS3 Learning Centre )

The Schools in the second wave, who are set to receive the funding are St Thomas More, Audenshaw, All Saints, Copley, West Hill, Fairfield and Longdendale

Andrew Gwynne MP, Parliamentary and Private Secretary to Schools Secretary Ed Balls MP said:

“This is excellent news for Tameside, and I am absolutely delighted with this announcement, particularly as the Tameside’s MPs lobbied hard to ensure our community got this well deserved investment in our children’s future.”

“This means every child in the borough will have access to high quality classrooms and cutting-edge facilities in their Secondary School, offering the best possible start in life to our children. It’s brilliant news”

“This marks real change for the better we can see in our community that has been brought in by this Labour Government.”

“The real challenge is for Tameside Council to ensure this money is now spent, particularly as the Conservatives are committed to cutting the BSF programme substantially. It’s great news Tameside has secured all the funding now, and I’m sure they will rise to the challenge of modernising our schools.”
